Following the successful launch of Backman21, BackmanBoats
is proud to announce the new Backman31 with canting wing keel technology.
Our passion for performance is directly expressed
in every new boat we make – enjoy sailing pleasure
with the Backman31. Design and development for the first boat has
started. For enquiries, please contact Hans
Backman.
The Backman31 is designed to be a “state-of-the-art”
off-shore and day racer including the latest technology
such as Canting Wing Keel, carbon rig and ultra light
displacement. It will also have four berths and a
galley.
THE RIG
Backman31 has a carbon rig selected because of
the lower weight and it is more responsive
to trim.
A gnav system is used to create maximum
space
in the cockpit.
Pros:
• very flexible rig
• low overall weight
• lower the boats centre of gravity

The canting wing keel is moved by a mechanical
purchase system – Magic Wheel developed together
with Ronstan UK Ltd. The keel is also designed with
adjustable wings to create lift and increase the
righting movement when sailing upwind. This
feature replaces a daggerboard.
CONSTRUCTION
Backman31 will be built of undirectional glass
and
epoxy with a foam core. Both hull and deck are
vacuum bagged and oven cured. This construction
gives a superior life span for the boat even a 6-7
years old boat is as competitive as a new one.
Compared with polyester construction, a hull lasts
for 1-2 years (in competitive terms).
Pros:
• lighter boat
• no water absorption
• stronger boat
• longer lifetime

Backman31 with canting wing keel and light
displacement – these features offer a quality of
acceleration and speed that engages all the senses.
Low displacement is a major factor when you are
getting up on the plane. The major advantage with
a canting wing keel is that it is possible to reduce the
overall displacement with kept righting movement.
Pros:
• crew weight equaliser
• reduced displacement for a given righting movement
• low displacement = planes earlier
